Japanese Tea Ceremony - Thick Tea: Omotesenke Tea School

Experience a formal "thick tea" ceremony conducted in the tea house.  This demonstration is led by practitioners from the Omotesenke Tea School visiting from the Princeton and New York regions.

Please note that Koicha (thick tea) has a smooth, thicker and more intense flavor than Usucha (thin tea) using a double amount of tea powder with less water.

Space is limited - only 4 guests may attend.  This demonstration takes place in the tea house, and guests will be required to sit on the floor for the duration of the program. Guests are asked, but not required, to wear plain white socks.

Japanese Classroom is a formal Japanese language education program geared towards working adults. Each course covers 3 chapters in the New Japan Times Genki books over 10 weeks. Class meetings are held weekly from 6:00 - 7:30 PM online through Zoom. Classes begin on May 28th and will be held on Mondays. Classes will not be held the week July 4th (July 3rd).

Class Absence Policy

Class recordings may be made available to students with legitimate excused absences, which include family emergencies, health concerns, or other emergencies as determined by the course instructor. Class recordings will not be made outside of these excused absences and another method of catching up will be determined by the teacher.

Class Materials Policy

Any material shared in class over the course of the semester is not meant to be distributed outside of class. Students are not permitted to download and share class materials to anyone outside of class. 

JASGP Presents: A Tour of Raymond Farm and Nakashima Studios

 

Join us for an up close and personal view of the Raymond Farm Center for Living Arts and Design and the Nakashima Woodworking Studios. Meet us in New Hope, PA, about 45 minutes northeast of Philadelphia for a day of exploration and learning.

 

The tour will meet at Raymond Farm Center for Living Arts and Design at 11am for a tour of that site first, followed by a bento box lunch at 1pm, after which participants will travel to nearby Nakashima studios for a tour starting at 2pm and ending at 4pm.

 

Participants will have to arrange transportation themselves, but are welcome to park at both locations. Bento box lunch will be provided.

How to Purchase Tickets

Click on 'other dates' and 'other times' and find a time and day you would like to come. Type in the desired amount next to the tickets you would like to buy and click on 'add to cart'. Fill in your personal information and click on 'check out' to complete your purchase. You will receive an email with "Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia - eTickets" as the subject line: click the link in this email to access the barcode tickets and have them ready to scan at the admission window.

OPENING HOURS: Shofuso is open rain or shine Tuesday through Sunday, 11am to 5pm from the end of March to the end of October, and Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm from November through mid December.

Read Carefully:

  • Tickets can be purchased online up to four weeks in advance. Depending on availability, timed tickets are also available for in-person purchase at Shofuso.
  • General admission tickets allow entrance to Shofuso on the selected date at the selected time. We ask all visitors to please arrive within 15 minutes after the start time on their tickets. Late arrivals may be switched to the following available time slot or refused entry, depending on capacity.
  • ALL TICKETS ARE FINAL AND NON REFUNDABLE.
  • Photoshoots are not permitted during regular open hours.
  • Please be sure not to leave any valuables in your car due to a recent spate of break-ins in Fairmount Park targeting cars with clearly visible bags and laptops. Before visiting, double-check that to see that you have your wallet, camera and other personal items. We are not responsible for theft or damage to vehicles or contents.
  • Guest passes require a free reservation and must be presented upon arrival. Please select “Promotional Ticket” at checkout if you have one.

Japanese Classroom 101b "Conversational Japanese for Beginners"

Japanese 101 Conversational Japanese for Beginners is a new 101 course that focuses more on casual learning. This class is less focused on grammar or script memorizing, and is more geared towards learning Japanese for travel or other less formal uses. Feel free to visit our other 101 course link to learn more.

Japanese Classroom is a formal Japanese language education program geared towards working adults. Each class will cover one unit of the textbook "Nihongo Fun & Easy" each lesson every week, so 10 units in 10 weeks. Class meetings are held weekly from 6:00 - 7:30 PM online through Zoom. Classes begin on September 29th and will be held on Fridays until December 8th. Classes will not be held the week Thanksgiving (November 24th). 

Every phrase and sentence comes with pronunciation guide (Romanized characters) in this textbook, so students can start speaking without having to memorize all of the Hiragana, Katakana, nor Kanji characters. The students will learn how to introduce themselves, ask directions, ask questions about prices when shopping, making requests & permission, learn what to say at the restaurant, and so on - a lot of expressions useful while traveling in Japan. (Learn practical Japanese in an easy and more relaxed mode.)
