The Artistic Interconnections between Japan and the United States are explored in this architectural tour of mid-century modern houses in New Hope, Pennsylvania. Participants in this event will be led on a guided tour of the Nakashima / Amagasu House (designed by furniture maker George Nakashima in 1969 for his daughter Mira) and a series of structures at the Nakashima Studios (including the interiors of the Conoid Studio, the Arts Building, and the Reception House), in addition to the nearby Raymond Farm (designed by Antonin Raymond in 1939 following 18 years working in Japan, including one year with Frank Lloyd Wright). The three hour tour will be led by William Whitaker, Mira Nakashima, and members of the Raymond family. Access to these rarely open interiors and the chance to meet members of the Raymond and Nakashima Families on site are highlights.
Check-in starts at 9:30am with the tour beginning promptly at 10am. The tour concludes at approximately 1:30pm. Participants should be prepared to walk on uneven surfaces and grassy areas.
Tour registration includes free admission passes to Shofuso. Proceeds benefit the Shofuso Japanese House and Garden Roof Restoration Fund.
