Arthur Flory and Modern Japanese Printmakers

Join us for a discussion of Arthur Flory’s fruitful collaborations with Japanese printmakers in postwar Japan. This Philadelphia-based artist established a workshop in Japan in the 1960s, introducing the art of lithography to many important Japanese painters and printmakers. With Flory's guidance, artists such as Munakata Shikō, Saitō Kiyoshi, and Shinoda Tōkō, among others, expanded their artistic horizons, blending their existing styles with lithographic methods to create bold and dynamic prints that stood out in the printing movements of the 1960s. For some, it was a one-time experiment; for others, it had a profound influence, changing their artistic practices forever. Thanks to the Philadelphia Museum of Art's extensive collection of modern Japanese prints, we will be able to view some artists' lithographs alongside their woodblocks, observing how similar ideas take different shapes depending on the medium. The creativity and cultural exchange evident in the works of Flory and his students attest to the vitality of artistic connections that transcend national boundaries.
