Get a first-hand look at Japanese architecture as we restore Shofuso’s roof. Our roof is made of hinoki, a Japanese cypress, and is the only one of its kind in the United States. The care and upkeep of a hinoki bark roof demands precision and knowledge of traditional roofing techniques.
This October, Tanigami Roofing Co. LLC, a Japanese roof restoration company, will come to Shofuso and restore part of the roof. Scaffolding tours offer a birds-eye view of the Japanese craftsmen at work twice daily at 12 pm and 3 pm.
